With the beginning of summer, the last construction work in order to renaturate the southern part of the Isar river will be completed!

It almost seems centuries ago that the Isar river was a rectified body of water, trapped in concrete and inaccessible for locals. Eleven years ago, however, Munich started a unique urban nature project to recreate the Isar's natural course. Intended as precautionary measures to prevent river floods, the renaturation project soon showed that it also created a wonderful recreation area. Now, the last section of the renaturation will be finished, which will give leisure seekers the opportunity to take a swim or walk along the river bank between the Flaucher (near the Munich zoo, Thalkirchnerstr.) and Reichenbach Bridge (Fraunhoferstr.).

In fact, the project has become such a success that in the mean time Munich is considered an international showcase project. Indeed, the renaturation has enhanced the quality of living decisively and luckily, city officials have already announced plans to continue the enterprise, which has cost € 35 million so far. The upcoming plans will focus on the section between Luitpold Bridge and the Oberföhringer weir.
