It almost seems centuries ago that the Isar river was a rectified body of water, trapped in concrete and inaccessible for locals. Eleven years ago, however, Munich started a unique urban nature project to recreate the Isar's natural course. Intended as precautionary measures to prevent river floods, the renaturation project soon showed that it also created a wonderful recreation area. Now, the last section of the renaturation will be finished, which will give leisure seekers the opportunity to take a swim or walk along the river bank between the Flaucher (near the Munich zoo, Thalkirchnerstr.) and Reichenbach Bridge (Fraunhoferstr.).
