Elector Johann Wilhelm’s Pictures

Information:
As early as the 18th century, the art collection of Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz (1658–1716) was considered to be one of the most significant in Europe. This treasure of the art-loving Elector from the Wittelsbach family was transferred to Munich between 1799 and 1806, and belongs to the highlights of the Alte Pinakothek. After 300 years in storage, the entire collection will see the light of day once more from January 22 through May 3 at the Alte Pinakothek. For this extraordinary show, the museum will reconstruct the interiors of the picture cabinets at Wilhelm’s Düsseldorf palace—the first exhibition spaces for the Elector’s acquisitions. It will at last be possible to view Dutch, Flemish and Italian baroque paintings—including works by Rubens and Rembrandt—in their original hanging scheme. But beware! It may challenge modern viewing habits, as the pictures will be hung without any gaps on the walls.
