In the 1960s, Dutch physicist J.R.J. van Asperen de Boer developed an ultrared technique to look through paint layers. Though seemingly similar to x-radio, the technique rather penetrates the painting that the upper layers appear transparent. In the 1990s, de Boer's pioneer work was perfected by the means of digitalization. Now, infrareflektography provides the possibility to show the outline drawings of a painting. The Alte Pinakothek has chosen eight outstanding examples by Dürer, Cranach and Holbein giving insight to meticulous preparation these old masters completed before they started on the final painting.

The exhibition will be on display as part of the 175-year anniversary celebration series of the Alte Pinakothek. For more information, visit pinakothek.de/alte-pinakothek.
