Address Book Secrets

Elisabeth Schmidbauer, Manager of the Schlosscafé im Palmenhaus at Nymphenburg Palace

Nymphenburger Hof
A lot of restaurants come and go, but this one’s been great for years. It’s not cheap, but you get what you pay for—the quality is superb. And it’s got a fantastic garden, which makes you wish the weather were nice all the time, just so you could sit in it.
Nymphenburger Hof, Nymphenburgerstrasse 24, Tel. 123 38 30

Trader Vic’s
This restaurant in the Bayerischer Hof hotel is really something different. It serves Polynesian and South Pacific specialties and has a real exotic feel about it. The atmosphere is super.
Trader Vic’s, Bayerischer Hof,< Promenade Platz 26, Tel. 212 09 95

Frankonia
This is a fabulous traditional shop for hunting clothes and Tracht—they’ve got a really good selection of stuff. Seeing as my body’s the right shape for Tracht, I may as well wear it as often as possible!
Frankonia, Maximiliansplatz 10, Tel. 290 00 20

Forsthaus am See
This is a lovely restaurant in Possenhofen, on the banks of Lake Starnberg. It’s a great location, and the food is really good too. It’s one of my favorite places to go if I want to get out of Munich.
Hotel Restaurant Forsthaus am See, Am See 1, Possenhofen, Tel. (08157) 930 10

Nymphenburger Porzellanmanufaktur
This is a lovely porcelain shop, and is very convenient for me, working in the palace! What I like about it is that it’s not just full of dusty, old-fashioned ornaments, but that there really is something for everyone, including some quite modern things.
