On the Ball

Though you may have barely recovered from Christmas and New Year, the next round of celebrations is already underway in Munich: it’s carnival time, or Fasching, as it is known in German. And, as in previous years, the Deutsches Theater is the city’s number one venue for carnival balls. Whether you want to ogle the incredible decorations, the dancing celebrities or just spend an evening living it up with friends, there is a celebration here to suit everyone. Rout out your most bizarre costume for the “Karneval wie dazumal” ball, where dressing up is of the essence or enjoy the sensuous Latin rhythms at the “Viva la fiesta” ball. On the other hand you can bop till you drop at the “Final Countdown mit Charivari 95,5” or put on your most elegant eveningwear for the “Fête Formidable.” Information on individual balls is listed in the calendar section of this magazine on page 21. For details on ticket prices and bookings, visit www.deutsches-theater.de. Another great Fasching tradition has been revived this year at the Haus der Kunst. Once a much-loved tradition, the carnival ball at Haus der Kunst has been given a new lease of life. On February 21, in the Terrassenhalle of the museum, a glittering costume ball will take place to rival carnival celebrations anywhere. Doors open at 8 pm and there is an Abendkasse, though it is best to buy tickets in advance. Call (089) 21 12 71 72 between 11 am and 12 pm for reservations.
