Toast of the Town

You are invited to celebrate Munich’s 845th birthday. The city center will be abuzz with festivities on June 14 and 15. The celebrations kick off on Saturday at 11 am on Marienplatz with music and dance performances. From rock ’n’ roll to gospel, musical shows are just some of the highlights on Marienplatz and in the courtyard of the Rathaus (see web site below for exact times). Kids are kept entertained at the children’s recreation area Kinderland, located at the Marienhof, and a handicraft fair on Odeonsplatz provides an over-the-shoulder look at artists at work, as well as an array of their finished products. Get a taste of Munich—then and now—with recipes from the Middle Ages as well as classical Munich cuisine, which wouldn’t be complete without the city’s most famous beverage. A light installation cast against the façade of the Rathaus by artists Philipp Stegmüller and Michael Reinhold, representing the theme Lichtreise durch das Farbspektrum (Light Journey through the Color Spectrum) rounds off both evenings at 10 pm. On Saturday the fun begins at 10 am and ends at 11 pm, and on Sunday at 11 am ending at 10 pm. For more information see www.muenchen-tourist.de and click on Stadtgründungsfest.
