Under Surveillance

Helping police online

Under Surveillance Every month, viewers around the world tune in to programs similar to America’s Most Wanted or the Germany’s live criminal hunt, XY. Those who watch are shown clues regarding elusive bad guys and asked to call in if they have further information. In an effort to maximize the success of crime solving by sharing the gory details with the public, many police bureaus have taken their show on the cyber road, and Munich’s finest are no exception. At www.polizei.bayern.de/ppmuc, amateur detectives and concerned citizens have the opportunity to scan a gallery of thugs and missing persons in search of a familiar face. A full description of the case details is found by clicking on the grim portraits. Though the Munich page is in German only, the Bavaria-wide homepage offers the option of English or Deutsch and contains a wider range of information, such as special warnings, press conferences and, not for the faint-hearted, photographs of unidentified corpses. Though grisly, it may not be a bad idea to have a look. This month the Munich site pictures a set of expensive golf clubs that police hope to return to their rightful owner. <<< LV
