Film Festivals

Despite the summer weather, many Munich residents will spend the month of June in darkened movie theaters. From June 12 through June 18, the Munich International Short Film Festival will present 38 movies from 26 countries. The movies—from two-minute shorts to half-hour reels—will be presented in blocks every night at 6:30 pm and 8 pm. Tickets cost € 5 and a festival pass available for € 18 will be offered as well. (To get the pass you will need a passport photo). For a detailed list of scheduled films, which will be showing at the Gloria Palast and Mathäser, visit www.muc-intl.de.
After the short film warm-up, the Filmfest München will celebrate its 25th anniversary. Since 1983, the festival has established itself as Germany’s most important summer festival, featuring an appealing selection of international films. The local filmmaking scene will also get its due by way of a retrospective featuring Bavarian artist Herbert Achternbusch, who will turn 70 this year. Another special guest will be Oscar-winning actress Julie Christie, whose life’s work will be honored with the CineMerit Award. Tickets for the festival, which will open on June 21 and end on June 28, can be pur- chased at the Filmfest box office at Gasteig, or online at www.filmfest- muenchen.de. <<<
