Tribute to a Scientist

In contrast to the wide recognition enjoyed by successful expatriates in the fields of performing arts and culture, public perception often neglects the achievements of scientists abroad. Professor Alexander Bradshaw is a classic example of such inadvertent disregard. Professor Bradshaw was born in 1944 in Bushey, England. He went on to become President of the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG), and co-founded the online trade journal New Journal of Physics, a shared publication of the DPG and the British Institute of Physics. For almost ten years, he has headed the plasma physics department at the Max-Planck-Institute in Garching near Munich: one of the world’s leading research institutes on nuclear fusion. Such pioneering work has just been honored by Queen Elizabeth II. In December, she decorated Bradshaw with the “Commander of the British Empire” medal for his contributions to the research of nuclear fusion. <<<
