Mark Rothko

From February 8 through April 27, the Hypo Kunsthalle dedicates a retrospective to Mark Rothko (1903–1970), an eminent representative of Abstract Expressionism. The American artist emigrated from Russia in 1913, then studied at Yale and the New York School of Design before beginning work as a painter in 1930. Bit by bit, Rothko felt his way from figurative beginnings to surrealistic experiments, until he reduced his paintings to pure constellations of color. Because of the paintings’ delicate surfaces, exhibitions of Rothko’s work in Europe are rare. Thus the show of more than a hundred paintings and works on paper will be a unique opportunity to get a comprehensive overview of the artist’s early beginnings through to his mastery. <<<
