Christmas Events for Children

Of all the months in the year, December is probably the longest for children. The three-week countdown until Christmas seems endless, but a delightful program of local concerts, theater productions and events make the wait easier and more pleasant.
On December 2, Zoran Drvenkar’s The Night my Sister Kidnapped Santa Claus — a narrated concert for children — will be presented at Schloss Nymphenburg’s Hubertussaal. The concert, with the Bethlehem All Star ensemble, begins at 3 pm.
From December 3 to 19, the Himmelswerkstatt (heavenly workshop) invites children ages 6 to 12 to tinker, play and bake their own Christmas cookies at the Ratstrinkstube in City Hall. The free event is arranged and led by professional artists and teachers from the Children’s and Youth Museum, daily from 2:30 pm to 4 pm, and 4:30 pm to 6 pm. Meeting point is the City Hall’s gate at the Fischbrunnen.
A musical adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s novel Little Lord Fauntleroy will be performed at the Deutsches Theater from December 4 to 16. Tickets cost € 19–49.
On December 9 at Schloss Nymphenburg’s Hubertussaal, members of the Philharmonic Orchestra and a puppeteer ensemble will present Mozart on Tour. The puppet play about the Austrian composer’s life starts at 4 pm. Tickets range from € 16–28.
Gasteig will entertain children with three musicals during Advent season. On December 9 at 3 pm, Merry Christmas Little Polar Bear will be performed at the Carl-Orff-Saal. Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf will be presented at the Kleiner Konzertsaal on December 16 at 11 am, 12:30 pm and 2 pm. Carl-Orff-Saal’s stage will also host the Adventures of Robin Hood on December 20. That musical’s performances start at 9 am and 10:45 am. Tickets for each of the events cost € 12–19. Throughout the month the most classic children’s opera of all time, Hänsel and Gretel, is on the schedule of the Circus Krone, the Bavarian State Opera and the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz.
