Curating Quandaries

With an influx of private art collectors and a draining of public resources in recent years, it has become increasingly difficult for museums to maintain a commitment to contemporary art. Museums can hardly compete with the Charles Saatchis of the world. The recent excitement in Berlin about the dependencies of public museums of private collections made the state’s loss of it’s maecenatic role obvious. The Lenbachhaus calls attention to this predicament with an interesting new exhibition on the difficulties of curating modern art. “Perspectives ’07” will run from June 30 to November 25. On display will be works by rising stars that the museum was lucky to snap up at an early stage: Olafur Eliasson and Cerith Wyn Evans among them. Information on works they hope to acquire will give visitors a view of how one institution hopes to document the course of art in our time.
