Speaking Germany

“Young Jewish woman visiting Germany would like to have a conversation about nothing in particular with anyone reading this.” Israeli artist Sharone Lifschitz received over 180 replies when she posted this simple ad in German newspapers. Between April and September 2005, she travelled throughout the country to meet with her respondents for the first time. Lifschitz found that the phases of conversation with these people followed a predictable course, much like a meal. From the mutual appraisal of the “Aperitif” to saying goodbye with “One last drink,” Lifschitz organized excerpts from these conversations into themed text installations for a project commissioned by the City of Munich’s Public Art Program and the new Jewish Museum. Be on the lookout for presentations of the texts in unexpected places—on the sides of city trams, for example—throughout 2007. A list of the exact presentation schedule is available here.
