Ice Hockey in Hannover

Munich's hockey fans have it hard: The sport is nowhere near as popular as soccer and, to make matters worse, the local team--EHC Muenchen--barely struggled through its season of Division 2 play last year. Those longing for a solid slapshot might want to consider a trip north to Hannover for the Deutschland Cup, to be held November 9 to 12. Teams from Germany, Japan, Canada, Switzerland, Slovakia and Latvia will battle through a weekend of world-class play. The cup has been an annual event in Germany since 1987. Games used to take place in several cities at once, but for the first time this year, the cup will be held in just one location--Hannover's TUI Arena. The DeutscheBahn is making it easy for spectators from all over Germany to take part by offering a special deal for Hannover-bound hockey fans: Mention the phrase "Deutschland Cup" when ordering tickets through the special hotline at (01805) 31 11 53, Monday through Saturday, 8 am-9 pm, and receive a second class round-trip ticket to Hannover for € 99. The ticket is valid on all trains, including the ICE. Round-trip flights from Munich are available on AirBerlin, Dba and Condor for around € 150. Drivers can take the A7 to Autobahnkreuz Hannover-Sued, and then the Messeschnellweg 37 to the Expo-Plaza Exit. Day tickets to the games cost € 18.50-31.50. Three-day passes cost € 50.50-100.50. Both are available at www.eventim.de. Spectators who book a hotel through the Hannover tourist bureau here, however, will receive a 20% discount on their tickets to the games.
