The Sun is Out...

… and there are loads of things going on in and around Munich. Here’s a selection of the best of them:
On July 16 the Münchner Sommernachtstraum in the Olympiapark will see the sky over Munich filled with color and music for a mega fireworks display—the biggest in Germany—accompanied by performances from more than 200 musicians. Tickets, which include public transport, range from € 10 to €19 and can be purchased from München Ticket by calling Tel. (01805) 48 18 16 or visiting www.muenchenticket.de. See www.sommernachtstraum-muenchen.de for more information.
The longest open-air music festival in the world takes place August 1–28. Theatron MusikSommer, also in the Olympiapark, offers classical, rock, folk and pop concerts at Coubertinplatz and the Amphitheater. Check www.theatron.de for more information.
With the sort of flair we’re used to at the Oktoberfest, the 24th annual Olympiapark Sommerfest serves up carnival rides and shows, puppet theaters, marching bands, fireworks and of course lots of food and beer. It also features the 31st international Schifferstechen competition—a form of jousting on boats. For updates on this event and others, visit www.olympiapark-muenchen.de.
Here’s one for the early birds—Munich’s annual Kocherlball takes place on July 17 at 6 am. Yes, you read it right. Don your dirndl and get down to the Chinese Tower first thing on the Sunday morning for some traditional Bavarian dancing and drinking. Entry is free. <<<
