Islay

Islay may be located on Thierschstrasse in the heart of Lehel, but it’s named after a tiny island off the southwest coast of Scotland. The island is home to seven whiskey distilleries, which produce some of the finest single malts in the world. Yet the shared name is where the similarities between this sophisticated bar and restaurant and the small Scottish island end.

The restaurant stocks all of the seven Islay whiskies, as well as around 150 others. If you don’t know your blended from your grain, there are occasional tastings scheduled to help you out, and the professional staff are friendly—they even offer a “cheers” as they serve you your drinks—and always happy to advise. If you’re not a fan of whiskey, don’t fear ... it’s not compulsory! Islay also has a very good wine list, as well as cocktails and other spirits. The prices are slightly above mid-range; Islay is not inexpensive, but the quality of the place is reflected in the price you pay.

The front section is a bar and lounge, which opens up into a restaurant at the back. The menu is international and of a very high standard. It is a pleasure to find a place that has creative food that is not over-the-top. The emphasis is on fresh ingredients and simple, well-cooked dishes.

The décor is simple and stylish—dark wood, pale walls and soft candlelight. The bar and lounge area has an air of old-time glamour about it with its brown leather sofas and low wooden tables. It is classy and comfortable. There are also wooden tables outside when the weather is good, and it is situated in a beautiful location. The bar doesn’t usually get busy until later in the evening, when it really fills up. It is a lively place that attracts a diverse clientele. There is always a great atmosphere, and people seem to come here with fun (and whiskey) in mind! <<<
